Jesse Dean

By Published January 10, 2017

Jesse Dean was born and raised in a green, rocky hollow a few miles from Winslow, Arkansas, in a house with a piano for every room, walls hung with guitars and banjos, and a tin roof for rainy-day percussion. His skill as a musician is homegrown. He got an early start, picking out tunes on the piano and mandolin as a toddler

, and soon had the makings of a one-man band -- strings, drums, keys, vocals and the will to walk a long way. He learned by ear, brought up on bluegrass, gospel, soul, blues and rock, and the skill and stylings of his musician father, Keith Yingling.

Jesse spent his formative years as a teenager playing with peers and mentors in the living room-studio of Mike Hughes (1966-2009), a friend and mentor and a masterful sound engineer who was also at home on the keyboard and bass. Mike created a diverse and inviting musical space, listened to it carefully and filled it tastefully. He was instrumental in helping Jesse learn the art and mechanics of playing onstage. His first chance to do that regularly across Northwest Arkansas came with Quinn Talkin', a southern rock/country band fronted by Jeff Quinn, with Jesse on lead and rhythm guitar, some piano and vocals. For the past seven years, Jesse has been rocking lead guitar and vocals as frontman for Jesse Dean and Left of Center, a three-piece with a bluesy vibe and an upbeat groove, with two of the finest players in the area, Vince Turner on bass and Kevin Bonner on drums.

Jesse Dean’s blues-rock originals showcase soulful bass lines, muscular lead and rhythm guitar, vibrating riffs and sultry jams. They reflect a blend influences from Mark Knopfler and Gary Rossington to Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Warren Haynes and Cake. His are edgy songs of the South, smooth and blue, soaked in the sounds of the delta, revved up Texas boogie, richly electric rough-hewn southern rock played solid and clean.
